Acatenango/ Fuego Volcano Overnight Hike Adventure
-
- This excursion takes you up to the top of Volcan Acatenango, the most beautiful volcano in all of Guatemala, and a rather tall one too at 13,044 ft. / 3,976 m and to the Angry – Active Volcan Fuego (3763 meters).
- We set up our base camp where we have an all night view of lava explosions from Fuego Volcano. Your guide decides which volcano to hit first; one for sunset and the other for sunrise.
- Get some sleep and then wake before sunrise and hike with just a small bag and some water and snacks to the peak of one of these mighty volcanoes.
- Then either head up to the summit of Acatenango or head down the steep slopes descending to Volcan Fuego and the knife-ridge while relishing the views in the shadow of Volcan Acatenango.
- Finally, finish your trek with a beautiful high-alpine traverse descending around the two peaks of Acatenango.
- Above all this is an interesting, beautiful and challenging trek and something you will almost certainly remember for the rest of your life!
Please Note:
Acatenango/Fuego Volcano Hike: Difficult
The Acatenango Overnight Hike is difficult. One of the biggest challenges is the elevation; altitude sickness whilst normally not severe can make hiking that much harder. We always recommend being in Antigua Guatemala or a similar elevation (1500m) for at least 48 hours before doing the tour. This will give your body enough time to acclimatize and will make the climb significantly easier. If you are in fairly good shape, have acclimatized and have a good attitude you should be able to do this tour!
Expect 8 to 10 hours of hiking. Technical trails with slippery slopes, rock scrambling and steep terrain can be expected and with over 5000 ft. elevation gain.
For those that are not in good physical condition, (and for an additional nominal fee) you can:
- Have a sherpa carry your backpack and gear
- Have a guided horseback ride along side of our team of hikers
- Approx. 1.5-hour drive in a 4×4 pick-up truck up the mountain, and an easy hour walk up to basecamp, including a 10 minutes steep climb towards the end.
Antigua Mountain ATV Sunset Tour
- This 5-hour tour will take you to 3 mountain tops with incredible views of the city, valley, and volcanoes near and around Antigua.
- Our first stop is ¨El Cerro de la Cruz ¨ Antigua’s famous lookout point.
- After getting a close-up aerial view of the colonial city, we hop back on the vehicles and head up the El Hato Mountain towards our Second stop.
- We arrive at our parking lot in El Hato where we hop into our 4×4 pick-up truck which takes us to the “Santa Clara Forest” Here we take a small break to enjoy the fresh air, check out the bird sanctuary and stroll through the woods around this hidden gem.
- After visiting this marvelous place we will hop on a pick up truck towards our final stop which is ¨HOBBITENANGO¨. This is a Lord of the Rings themed Eco-Park where we catch the Sunset and are able to enjoy some food, drinks, and games.
- Here we will go up the hill to sightsee and visit the famous “HAND”, enjoy great views and various activities in this enchanted little forest.
- Once finished we will head back down the mountain towards our ATVs and back down to Antigua.

Please Note: Acatenango/ Fuego Volcano Overnight hike: Temperature
The temperature can vary greatly as can Acatenango’s weather. It can be 68+ Fahrenheit in the day as you hike up and get down to below freezing (32F) at night.
The coldest (and clearest) months are generally December to February but due to Acatenango’s elevation of 3976m it is cold all year round in the upper parts of the volcano. For this reason we recommend using a 3-layer system and always bring warm clothes.
Therefore, although we supply all warm clothing including parkas, hats and gloves, should you want to use your own gear/ clothing, please feel free to do so.
You must bring for Overnight Hike Volcano Adventure:
- A pair of comfortable sneakers and/or hiking shoes (must have good traction for slippery surfaces)
- The weather is extremely unpredictable therefore a well prepared layering system is the best answer ie. warm jacket, rain jacket, sweatshirt/ fleece, gloves, warm socks for early mornings and nights.
- Hiking clothes (a synthetic base layer, quick drying leggings or shorts),
- Sunscreen.
You must bring for the Waterfall Rappelling Adventure:
- Water shoes – any type of junky sneaker or shoe that you don’t mind getting wet that will give a secure fit. Not crocks.
- We will be hiking in water much of the time. We suggest synthetic pants (specifically non cotton) and not shorts, as we will be rappelling off rocky cliffs.
- Preferably a non-cotton t-shirt.
- Water cap.
- Bug spray.
- Hand towel.
- 55L/ 80L Hiking Backpacks (should be used as your carry-on for the plane)
- All meals, non-alcoholic drinks and snacks
- All camping gear; sleeping bag, sleeping mat and tents.
